COMMON REPLACEMENT WINDOW QUESTIONS

WHAT IS LOW E?

Low E is a metallic coating that is applied to the inside of the glass on the window. Low E helps to reflect the radiant heat out away from the window and the house. It is the component of the window that does the heavy lifting when it comes to energy efficiency. The higher the Low E rating, the better it will be at blocking the radiant heat. In addition to Low E there are other parts of the window that help to increase efficiency. Argon gas, foam filled frames and non conductive spacers between the glass can help with energy efficiency.

CAN I GET WINDOWS THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM MY CURRENT WINDOWS?

Yes, yes you can. The beauty of getting new replacement windows is that you have a blank canvas when the old windows are removed. You can change from a picture window to an operable one. You can change it from one that goes up and down to one that slides side to side. In some cases, we can even make the existing opening bigger so you can have more view to enjoy. We are an Installation Masters certified firm and we can help determine the best window options available for you.

WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPLACE MY WINDOWS?

The easiest answer: if it feels hot when you stand next to them in the summer, or cold next to them in the winter, it’s probably time. While that is a simple answer here are a couple of things that may mean it is time for change.

  • Windows are stuck shut
  • The frame is rotting or falling apart
  • The balancers will not hold the window up or make noise going up and down
  • You feel a draft coming around the edges of the window
  • The glass is fogged or moisture is forming between the glass
  • Windows older than 15 years can benefit from new window technology

HOW LONG DO NEW WINDOWS LAST?

The truth is new windows will not last forever. However, with the technology and quality available today, you can easily count on 40 to 50 years with new replacement windows. We carry Milgard Windows that offer a Full Lifetime Warranty. If there are any failures or issues with your windows, Milgard will take care of them as long as you own your home. When choosing replacement windows be sure to find a manufacturer that offers a Full Lifetime warranty. “Limited” lifetime won’t cut it if you want to be sure you are covered on your windows.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET REPLACEMENT WINDOWS?

This one is tough to answer because of the different variables that go into choosing a replacement window. Size, color, style, and installation requirements all factor into the overall cost for the project. The best way to get a correct cost is to schedule an appointment. We also offer an online cost estimator that will get you in the ballpark if you are not ready for an in house consultation.
